The issue of influence is extremely important. What/Who is going to be my guide in my life? This is an issue that we will face not only until we graduate but for all of our lives. Authority never goes away, even though we may no longer live under the roof our parents - God still expects us to obey Him and honor Him in our lives, and we are the happiest when we do so. So, What/Who should guide me in life choices?
1. The Word of God - Romans 12:2; Colossians 3:16
The Word renews our minds so that we look at life with the perspective and mind of Jesus Christ. Thus, we are thinking about our world in the same way that Jesus does. What do the Bible say about ________ (whatever decision you are facing.)
2. The Spirit of God - Ephesians 5:18
Instead of being influenced and controlled by the forces of this world (alcohol in this verse), we should be controlled by the Spirit of God. He will empower and enable us to live righteous lives and bring God glory.
3. Friends - Psalm 1; Proverbs 1
This is the most dominant influence in our lives because we are around our friends alot. Also, everyone wants to belong and "fit in." The mistake some teens make is saying, "Well, I don't care if I fit in." EVERYONE wants to fit in! The key is deciding who do I want to fit in with. Surround yourself with godly friends who will encourage you to do what is right in the sight of God.
4. Parents/Youth Pastors/Godly Adults - Ephesians 6:1
Know you don't want to hear this one because I bet this is the one you are struggling against right now. Parents are humans and make mistakes. They are wrong sometimes. They are also right alot of the times. You will never go wrong choosing to honor the godly authority in your life for God will honor you if you do it.
